There is an elderly gentleman that drives his baby blue VW safari bus by our playground every day. He doesn't wave even though I have every day (and if you know me you know that I am not discrete) however; his dog sits proudly in his lap and in a dog way acknowledges me with a smile.
I have chosen to name this man George and the dog’s name is Sally. I apologize to Sally if indeed Sally is a Sam but it is my challenge so there.
George wakes up every day at 5:15. He use to live on a farm and grew peaches and is set in his ways. After selling the farm he headed west to see the ocean. George had only heard about its beauty and had longed to step into the healing waters of the sea.
Upon arriving at the beach George was speechless. Girls in bathing suits showing body parts that had always been forbidden to see. A smile slowly came to his face. This was California and by golly he too would take off his shirt. As George slowly took off his shirt he was struck at the awe of the landscape. Never had he seen so many people enjoying themselves in the golden rays of the sun. Laughter was a new song for his aging ears. As George was ready to walk to the water a tiny little puppy began to lick his toes. Before George could even think his heart was melted with the innocence of the puppy and a friendship was born. George lifted his head to the horizon and in his clearest voice simply stated that he was home.
As George aged so did Penny. Penny had many puppies during her life span. Her last gift to George was Sally. By this time George had found a new way of life. He had traded in his Ford and purchased a VW van. He learned to surf and felt part of the world. He also learned how to grow a native plant that many o f his surfers friends enjoyed. But slowly George began to ache for the land he left behind. He felt it was time to return to peach farming and gave everything away but his van and Sally.
George and Sally still have the van and every morning George and his faithful friend Sally go pick peaches. They drive by a simple school yard every morning. Geroge keeps his keen eyes on the road as Sally becomes excited to hear the laughter of the children on the playground. Sally has a soft spot for the lady that waves everyday and smiles as Geroge drives by.
